Columbia Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin and Columbia City Council issued a proclamation to honor Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts on December 18 in the city of Columbia in recognition of his 40 years of service as the chief law enforcement officer in Lexington County.

New Veterans Workforce Development Center Ribbon Cutting On December 15th

Benedict College will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the Veterans Workforce Development Center (VWDC). The event will take place on Saturday, December 15th beginning at 10:30 a.m. at 2601 Read Street in Columbia, SC.  The Special Guest Speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Timothy A. Warner, Military Deputy, United States Army Research Office, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Lexington Middle School Students Win Art Contest

Local orthodontists Dr. Bob Garrison and Dr. Dan Pennella, along with the staff of The Braces Place, sponsored an art contest for students at Lexington Middle School.

The staff and patients at The Braces Place voted for their favorite entries on display in the office during the month of October.

The contest winners included Macy Lawson, first; Madison Lambert, second; and Ann Truong, third.

 Pelion High School Wins JROTC Awards

The Pelion High Drill and Rifle Teams led by instructor, Major Ron Dorsey, beat out 16 other schools to receive two first-place awards at their JROTC Division Meet.

The Pelion High Drill Team is led by PHS Army JROTC Battalion Commander Kelly Medlin who won first place in the drill competition. Additionally, the PHS Rifle Team, led by Alex Compo, won first place in the rifle competition.

Sheriff Metts Honors Deputy Of The Quarter

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts honored Deputy Justin Ashley as the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Employee of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2012 during an employee awards ceremony that Metts conducted on November 15. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Advisory Council selected Ashley to be recognized for his quick actions on July 1, when Ashley extinguished a stove fire that threatened to engulf a home on Keisler Road near Gilbert.

LCSD: Civilian Employee Of The Quarter

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts honored Senior Administrative Assistant Jennifer “Jennie” Wilfong as the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Civilian Employee of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2012 during an employee awards ceremony that Metts conducted on November 15.

Wilfong, 37, of Lexington, works in the Human Resources Division, Metts said. The sheriff hired Wilfong on May 18, 2008.

Applicants for jobs at the Sheriff’s Department regularly interact with Wilfong, who processes all the paperwork that job applicants submit to the agency, Metts said.
