COLUMBIA, SC (WIS/AP)- Only seven miles separate Dutch Fork High School and Irmo High School. But they are connected by two things: state titles and perfect seasons, both celebrated Friday night in Columbia.
The Dutch Fork girls team beat Dorman 46-43 in a thriller to win the Class 4A State Championship at Colonial Life Arena. Rose Robinson made three free throws in the final :09 to seal the win.
It was the first undefeated season for the Silver Foxes, who went 29-0, and extended their winning streak to 40 games. It was also the second consecutive state title for Dutch Fork, the only two state titles in school history.
Later in the night, Irmo's boy's team beat Goose Creek for the Class 4A state title, 65-46. The win also completed a perfect 29-0 season for the Yellow Jackets.
It was the second state title for Irmo in three years and the fifth in coach Tim Whipple's 32 years at the school. It was also the first undefeated season in the history of boys basketball at the school.
Justin McKie scored 20 points with 10 rebounds and Detrek Browning added 16 points to lead Irmo.
