Beauty pageant organizer accused of misappropriating funds | Crime
LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - The organizer of a beauty pageant intended to raise money for a boy with terminal illness has been accused of misappropriating funds raised by the event.
Lexington County Sheriff's deputies arrested 34-year-old Kelli Jean Chavis of Lexington on a charge of breach of trust with fraudulent intent. She is currently out on bond.
Sheriff James Metts says Chavis helped organize a beauty pageant in March to raise money to pay for the medical bills of Richard Culliver, who suffers from terminal brain cancer. Metts said Chavis transferred $1,875 of the money raised by the event into her personal bank account. That bank account was depleted from several transactions Chavis made for personal expenses, according to Metts.
Metts also said Culliver's family did not receive any money from Chavis in proceeds raised by the beauty pageant.
