Report: Multiple homes, vehicles burglarized in downtown area | Crime
The Aiken Department of Public Safety is searching for a burglary suspect they say burglarized four homes, and approximately twelve automobiles in the downtown area.
Police say just before 3:30 a.m., offices responded to the 300 block of Newberry Street SW for a burglar alarm.
Upon arrival, the male suspect fled the area on foot.
A perimeter was setup in the area. During the initial investigation it was discovered the suspect had also entered other homes adjacent to the initial location, the report stated. Police say a handgun was taken from one of the homes.
The report said at the time of the burglaries all of the homes were occupied by residents asleep in other areas of the residence.
Police say the suspect entered the home through some portion of the home which was unsecured.
A short time later, while searching the area, a resident contacted 911 advising a man was inside of their residence on the 200 block of Lancaster Street SW.
The caller stated the man was wearing dark clothing, and the suspect fled the incident location on foot.
An additional perimeter was setup.
Each perimeter was searched by the Aiken County Bloodhound Tracking team.
Public Safety also requested assistance from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to search the area with their helicopter, the report stated.
During the initial search of the area officers initiated a reverse 911 call to alert the residents in the area about what was going on, and to have them check their property to make sure they were not victims of a burglary while they were sleeping.
